AN INTERVIEW WITH

the kid fez

Yo what's up Nando how have you been man?

Yoooo what’s good lad! Yeah I’ve been good man. Wby?

Same here, just tying up loose ends for these last few shows of the year and sorting out a bunch of stuff to hit the ground running early next year.

I feel you man.

So you've been around the scene for a little while now and have gone through some interesting periods in it. What would you say has been the most impactful moment to your career as an artist as well as you personally?

Yeah man been in for a few years lad. Only been properly recording for about 4 years now if that. I’d say the most impactful event for me and my career was supporting Kerser in Darwin with the Darwin crew PaccRecords. Definitely was a dream come true supporting someone who inspired me to rap. And even my gig as well bro. Had like 10 people there but we ended up on the cover of abc news Darwin for “the rise” of rap in Darwin. I feel like performing is the best. I feel like that’s where I belong.

So let's take this all the way back to the beginning. What made you want to initially jump into the booth and what was that feeling like after hearing your first complete track for the first time?

Hmmm, what made me wanna jump in the booth. Shiiet. Well what made me wanna be a rapper was watching a Wiz Khalifa video of him on tour after he released the “rolling papers” album. The video was for “when I’m gone” I was like 14/15 and I was like yeah I want that. And I used to rap in school and late teens to early 20s to take the piss and make the lads laugh. Never took it seriously until a girl I know read my yellow notebook I had and said I should take it seriously and see what I can do with it.

My boy Patty introduced me to my boy popkorn and he met me in my apartment when I was sleeping on the floor. No recording or performing experience. Selling REDACTED as a job and shit ya know but ah yeah we chatted, I spat some bars from my notebook and he said let’s get to work.

Went to his house, he had a mic in his bedroom and I went from there. My first ever track was called “lost boyz” and I do look back on that track and smile coz that’s the fiery ever song performed as well. My mate who was a dj made the beat for me too. We sat at his place had some REDACTED and some beers and made the beat. Well he did, I just got REDACTED tbh.

If you had to describe your music to someone who had never heard of you before how would you describe it?

If I had to describe my music I would say it’s a mixture. I touch bass with a lot of things with my music. Because I want to hit all emotions for people ya know.

So do you think you could beat your old man in a freestyle or does he still have better bars than you?

To be honest my dad actually can’t freestyle that well. I’m teaching him but when it comes to writing and proper focusing lyrics he tops me for sure. He sits and thinks. I’ll freestyle about 4-6 bars then rap it then freestyle then next bit and write as I go. Trying to definitely take a leaf outta his book and think more about what I say.

Word on the street is that you have a new project on the way. Do you care to talk about it or share any information regarding the project?

I do! I do have a new project on the way lad! And I’m fucken keen for it aye! Yeah man. It’s a sort of take back to my first project I released which was the “lost soul” EP. But much darker and more of a push on mental health, suicide, drugs and alcohol. And push to know it’s ok to not be ok. I have a big passion about mental health awareness thru music and I love sad boy shit. It makes me feel good and I am a little bit myself so making that kind of music kinda soothes my soul adlay.

Also a little birdy told me that someone is celebrating their birthday on the sunday of the show at the Indi that they are also performing at. How are you feeling about performing at your first ever THR show?

Hell yeah I am man! Celebrating 28 rowdy fucken years of my life ma bah! Been a wild ride and I hope the show is just as wild tbh😂 big shout out to toxic heart and Jono for putting me on the show. I much appreciate it aye! I’m keen to perform for THR tbh man. Love the lads, love the label. I’m keen asf! Let’s get rowdy for a Sunday sesh I fucken say!

Lastly, if you had to choose one movie to watch for the rest of your life what would it be?

A movie to watch the rest of my life. Fuuuuuck man that’s hard aye! Probably blood in blood out bro! A Chicano/cholo classic man. A killer movie!

Any final words for the readers at home?

My final words are. Come down to the Indy bar on Sunday 03/11/24. Support live music, see different genres kill it and come get fucken rowdy for a Sunday sesh.

Big love The Kid Fez
